About the Event
This is our annual tradition of walking in our own parade showing off our greatest lantern creations and singing traditional St. Martin songs.Â
Please note:Â
For the second year, this event is held at our own school location in Warrenville, not in downtown Naperville!Â
We will meet at the school parking lot and walk through the neighborhood and adjacent park for about 30 minutes and return to the school. Bring the entire family, friends, or neighbors to be part of this wonderful tradition. Dress accordingly for chilly weather! Join us for cookies, coffee, and apple cider afterwards at the Activity Center at St. Irene (on the school campus).
Lantern Parade - Song Lyrics (PDF) and Map (PDF)
St. Martin’s parade is a widespread and fun event in Germany.  During the first week of November, we parade through downtown Naperville with decorative paper lanterns commemorating 4th century bishop St. Martin.  According to legend, Martin cut his red cloak in half to share with a beggar during a snowstorm. Over the centuries, lantern parades have become a widespread ritual in Europe and are still being conducted in many regions of Germany.
